Liposuction is becoming more and more popular as people realize that they can do something about the shape of their bodies. Diet and exercise are the best ways to reduce fat and improve body appearance, but sometimes there are pockets of fat that seem impervious to diet and exercise. Liposuction can be used on almost any part of the body, including waist, face, chin, breasts (Gynecomastia), legs, arms, neck and back.

Liposuction Procedure Information:
Liposuction is done on an outpatient basis at the Virginia Piper Outpatient Surgical Facility, unless very large volumes are removed, or it is combined with more extensive procedures, then an overnight stay is required. General anesthesia is usually used for safety and comfort. Dr. White uses tumescent solution (a dilute solution of saline, anesthetic and vasoconstrictors) in order to decrease blood loss, pain, and anesthesia requirements during fat removal surgery . Small suction tubes (cannulas) are inserted through very short incisions that are placed in inconspicuous locations near the fat deposits, and excess fat is removed.
You will return home with a compression garment over pads covering the treated areas. Because of the tumescent solution infused, fluid leakage for the first night is expected and pads are placed to catch it. They are changed as needed that night. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medications. You will be seen a few days after surgery for a change of garment and to ensure that you are doing well. Sutures are removed at one week after surgery. Typically, the garments are worn for 3 to 4 weeks, and most patients then change to lighter compression garments like Spanx. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2 to 4 weeks, and the final result takes shape over 6 to 12 months, although improvements to your shape are quickly apparent. Walking is encouraged even the first night to help encourage circulation. Normal activity and exercise are usually resumed at 3 to 6 weeks.

Liposuction is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance.
