This surgery is done on an outpatient basis at the Virginia Piper Outpatient Surgical Facility in Scottsdale under general anesthesia. The design of the incisions includes incisions around the pigmented area (the NAC or nipple areolar complex) and extending vertically below the nipple, and sometimes also in the fold under the breast. The NAC is repositioned higher, the excess skin is removed, and the breast is reshaped in a pleasing contour and in a more normal position. The insertion of a breast implant may or may not be advisable, depending on your preferences.
You will return home in a soft surgical bra over gauze padding. You will be seen in our office the following day and checked to make sure your recovery is going well. You may have a plastic-feeling dressing along the suture lines known as Prineo that ideally remains in place for 3 weeks, adding support and protection to the suture lines. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Walking around and light activities can be resumed even the night after surgery, but no lifting or exertion that elevates the heart rate should be done. Bleeding requiring emergency surgery can result from too much activity for the first few weeks. Full activity can be resumed 6 weeks afterward. You may drive as soon as you are not taking any narcotics (you can be arrested for a DUI even if you are prescribed the medications for surgery). After the first week, if you have smooth surfaced implants you will be shown how to move them around to help prevent scar tissue formation.
